With filing season just around the corner, there are some steps you can take to get an early start on your individual income taxes.

If you have any updates to your personal information, be sure to report any changes to us through your online services account. Just log in to your account and send us a secure email outlining your changes.

Don’t have an online services account? Enroll now. You’ll need a copy of your most recently filed Virginia tax return to enroll.

Some of the most common changes are:

  • Your address
  • Your name (due to life events such as marriage or divorce)
  • Your Social Security Number

Keeping copies of your past tax returns is also important. You may need a copy of your 2017 tax return to make it easier to fill out your 2018 tax return. If you’re using a software product for the first time, you may need to provide information from last year’s return to complete your 2018 return.

You should keep your tax records for at least 3 years to help you prepare an accurate return and pay the correct taxes for the upcoming year. For more information, visit Recordkeeping for Individual Income Tax Purposes.
